COA
is a non-denominational, non-profit organization
that follows faith-based teachings that
tell us to provide love and assistance to
those in need. Our faith compels us to feed
the hungry, clothe the naked, shelter the
homeless, provide spiritual support to the
emotionally weak, and heal the sick . .
.and ultimately to teach them the skills
necessary to reach and sustain self-sufficiency.
COA is located in a church building in the
East Village of downtown Long Beach. The
local community consists of many who show
no income, incomes below the poverty level,
or in the case of the elderly and disabled,
those living on a fixed income. Our service
area has a large number of the poor, the
unemployed, people on public assistance,
and the homeless, many of whom are women
and children. Because of its location, COA
is often the first place people turn to
for help.
A recent Los Angeles Times article indicated
that Long Beach is 10th in the nation of
major cities for those living at the poverty
level. COA seeks to improve the quality
of life of the people we serve. However,
“quality” is just a concept
when you don’t have a roof over your
head, a blanket to shield you from the cold,
or food to feed your hungry children. More
than two decades of service have taught
us that these clients are best served by
first stabilizing their daily existence...relief
from cold and hunger, protection from exposure
to the elements, the dangers of the street,
and despair.
Many
of these needs can be met through the combined
services provided by COA and other local
agencies. With assistance and support, struggling
families and individuals are encouraged
and motivated toward secure, independent
and decent lives.
