Donations sought to cover growing expenses
Christian Outreach in Action (COA), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that provides food, clothes and other services for families and individuals in need in Long Beach and nearby environs, reports a significant surge in demand for diapers with the pandemic.
Prior to the COVID-19 emergency, the nonprofit’s diaper giveaway from 10 a.m. to noon each Friday served up to 50 mothers per session. In April the demand surged to 130 the first giveaway, then 93 mothers on April 10.
“Our organization exists to help anyone in need, especially during periods of unforeseen challenges like this,” said Dixie Dohrmann, Executive Director of COA. “With the coronavirus, more mothers than ever have been taking advantage of our weekly diaper giveaway.
“It indicates real concerns, about finances or employment or other troubles. We’re very happy to help out, and we hope for community support to continue doing so.”
In April, for the first time mothers were lined around the building at Third Street and Linden Avenue by the time COA staffers arrive at 9 a.m.
The nonprofit funds purchase of the diapers, costing about $200 to $250 per week in April. The pandemic crisis has been especially difficult for COA because supermarkets have had less excess food to donate, and the nonprofit’s fund-raising thrift store was forced closed.
At the weekly diaper giveaway, COA personnel also have distributed extra baby items, or food left over from COA’s twice-weekly food bank, to visiting mothers.
Clients must bring a child or a form of identification such as a birth certificate, immunization record or a government benefits card. One child per adult, and 13 diapers per child.
