In lieu of gifts, Julia asked her friends and family to donate money to Christian Outreach in Action, a local charity that feeds the hungry in Long Beach. Her friends and family raised $400 in cash for the nonprofit, and Julia dropped off the money on Tuesday.
“It just came up in my mind,” said Julia, who turns 7 years old today, about her idea to give up birthday gifts to help the needy. “I really wanted to feed the hungry, because I don’t want people suffering without any food.”
Julia said that her mother, Alexis Recana, immediately agreed to help her.
“I said, ‘Mom, instead of getting gifts, can I donate money to the poor?’ And she said yes,” Julia recalled.
She added that she thought about the idea for a week before discussing it with anyone. Julia said no one influenced her to make the decision and that her friends and family all wanted to help her accomplish her goal of feeding the hungry for her birthday. When she grows up, Julia wants to “teach the word of God,” she said.
Recana believes that her daughter’s strong faith in God inspired the little girl to raise money for Christian Outreach in Action.
