Social
Services
515 East Third Street is
the headquarters for COA and the location
for the social services we provide. Based
on the statistics for the first five months,
in 2004, COA will:
- Serve
more than 60,000 meals, with the help
of several local churches. Meals include
breakfast (COA prepares and serves all
the breakfasts) and dinner, Monday through
Friday, and lunch on odd Saturdays each
month;
- Distribute
clean, decent clothing and groceries,
including vitamins and hygiene supplies.
When available, bus tokens will go to
300 clients a month so they can get to
medical appointments, job interviews,
and other agencies;
- Provide
furniture such as beds, stoves and refrigerators
to needy neighbors;
-
Host an Easter Party in conjunction with
a local church, special Thanksgiving dinners,
and Christmas gifts and a party for low-income
neighborhood children.
Women's
Transitional Housing
COA
owns and operates a 12-unit women’s
transitional housing facility for women
recovering from substance and/or physical
abuse and their children. A mother and her
child(ren) can live in their own two bedrooms,
two-bath apartment at significantly reduced
rental rates.
Each family works individually with a case
manager. The women learn life and child
advocacy skills, as well as how to live
in community. They attend bi-monthly meetings
at the house, as well as programs pertinent
to their addiction. Residents are encouraged
to pursue education so they can upgrade
their employment and earn wages that will
support permanent housing and independence.
To be a part of the program they must work
or go to school. On an average ten mothers
are in school. Children have the opportunity
to become involved in outside activities,
at school and in the community. This gives
the young people the chance to be involved
in leadership development, and it keeps
them off the streets.
