Christian Outreach in Action: 34 years serving Long Beach homeless

LONG BEACH >> With so many meals served, it seems like the volunteers at the Christian Outreach in Action would get dish-pan hands.
The nonprofit near downtown Long Beach provides 121,000 hot meals a year — breakfast and dinner Monday through Friday, and lunch every other Saturday and the last two Sundays of the month — and now it’s preparing for its Waves of Change fundraiser, set for 6 p.m. Sept. 19 at the Long Beach Airport Marriott, Executive Director Dixie Dohrmann said.
She said the COA center, at 515 E. Third St., does not receive public funding but operates with donations from Boeing and neighboring schools that host food and shoe drives.
She added that the center — and the hot meals for that matter — also really benefited from former Mayor Bob Foster’s donation of a stove, which he paid for with part of his mayoral budget.
“We’re the little engine that could,” Dohrmann said.
